When you have a child with autism, birthdays are almost always bittersweet. Last week, Lucas turned 21 so this birthday was really bittersweet for me since Lucas has now completely transitioned to the adult autism world.
You see, part of me is feeling grateful that Lucas is in a good place in terms of his health and the services that he has in place. In fact, I can confidently say that Lucas, even though he remains significantly impaired with moderate to severe autism, has reached his fullest potential and will continue to reach it going forward because, I won’t let the bar be lowered for him…ever.
So while Lucas is thriving (and I’m grateful about that), I’m feeling sad and angry at the same time... because very few children with autism are getting the kind of ABA programming that can turn things around for them and enable them to reach their fullest potentials.
Many parents are on waiting lists for evaluations and treatment -- and many programs are simply not using cutting edge practices that make a difference.
There’s no other disorder or disease that a child could be diagnosed with that would require parents to work this hard to try to get the best outcome for their children.
Can you imagine if your child was diagnosed with cancer and you as a parent were told that you had to wait months or years for a diagnosis or to get treatment...?
...Or if the doctor told you that your child wasn’t entitled to the best chemotherapy and instead was given medicine that was almost surely not going to work?
I’m sad and angry because it just shouldn’t be this hard for parents.
Everywhere I turn, and in almost every new child observation or evaluation that I’ve done since becoming a BCBA in 2003, I see children with autism whose therapy and services I’d call “sub-par” at best and sometimes it looks much worse than that.
AND, it’s usually not the fault of the school staff, Behavior Analysts, SLPs, or other professionals either. Well-meaning professionals around the globe are struggling to help kids who have very different and complicated language needs as well as problem behaviors. So this is why, after 2 decades in the autism world, I’m sad and angry.
For those of you who know me personally, you know that I’m not one to wallow in despair or give up easily. In fact, I’ve been compared to a piranha and a mama bear for Lucas and all my clients... ...and one of the leaders in the field of Autism and Applied Behavior Analysis, Dr. Dick Malott, even called me the leader of the “pissed-off autism mama” movement in his ABAI Presidential address a few years ago!
I’m not going to sit back and watch kids get services that aren’t meeting their needs and to watch families struggling needlessly.
I’m passionate about helping both parents and professionals - and especially BCBAs, so they can learn better ways to turn things around for their children and for their clients.
I’ve set a big, bold new goal to help 2 million kids reach their fullest potentials by 2020.
To do this, I need your help.
Since you got this far in this long email and are still reading it, you might be a perfect addition to join my mission.
You see, even though I’ve been a Behavior Analyst since 2003, and wrote my best-selling book, The Verbal Behavior Approach over a decade ago, it wasn’t until 2 years ago that I finally figured out how to get my procedures out to professionals and parents around the world … and that was through my online training course.
With my signature course “Autism ABA Help: Online Training for Professionals and “Gung-Ho” Parents,” I've been able to get my procedures and step-by-step system in the hands of hundreds of BCBAs, SLPs, teachers and parents. Even a few grandparents joined us when the course was last opened in March!
In addition to parents, our online community includes many autism practitioners, ranging from BCBAs, Speech Pathologists to teachers and tutors, from over 44 different countries. And my courses are now approved by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board to provide 12 Type II continuing education credits, making the program even more valuable.
Now, you might be thinking…how in the world can this program be great for novice parents and ALSO suitable for very seasoned professionals?
Well, I thought the same thing in 2015 when I started creating my course.., and I’ve been advised by online marketing experts to only teach either parents or professionals but not both.
Too bad…I want to teach both professionals and parents…because years and decades are going by and we simply don’t have any time to spare!
Our online community is like no other.
We’re all learning every day and together we’re transforming lives and celebrating our successes.
I’m on many Facebook groups and our group is one of the most positive and helpful groups I’ve ever been a part of. The mix of both “gung-ho” parents and a variety of autism professionals makes the membership group really special and supportive.
This isn’t just a 60-day course.
Taking this course and joining my community could very possibly change the life of your child or your clients, and in the process it will change your life too, as it has for so many others.
As I said, I’m on a mission to turn things around for 2 million children with autism by 2020 through my online training and community for both parents and professionals.
So in honor of Lucas’ bittersweet 21st birthday and with my mission in place, I want to get my online course, Autism ABA Help: Online Training for Professionals and “Gung-Ho” Parents in as many hands as possible.
For the next 3 days, you can join us for a very special price of only $397 which is $100 off the regular price. I’m also offering a payment plan to make it available to as many people as possible. You can get all the details by clicking the link below.
